Part 3: Debugging
I would say as programmers we spend 30% of our time writing code, 5% testing it, 15% coming up with the ideas, and 50% debugging it. Or is that just me?
Well, just like coding life can throw unexpected errors your way that you didn’t have catches or warning for. We can’t foresee everything that will happen in life just like we can’t foresee what will happen in programming. A package we use may have its own bug, it may have a vulnerability discovered that impacts our code, or it may have been abandoned.
I fell into the latter category and as such fell into a very dark place. I took a break from everything I enjoyed or thought I enjoyed because it didn’t bring me excitement or joy anymore. It took me a long time to recover from this but through therapy and determination I have made it to a place that I can now get back to those things I once loved.
This isn’t necessarily coding related but I feel that there are several of us in the field that fall victim to some sort of depressive episodes or other darkness. I think it is time to lift the veil and remove the stigma. If you or someone you know are struggling please reach out to the 988 lifeline.
